Valuing a Secular State

I have lifted a chapter from my book, Thoughts, a philosophy of life, to present it in this format as an essay, reformatted to make it more readable.  My purpose for doing so is that I feel the topic is more essential than ever.  However, references are made in the essay that refer to other sections of the book.

One explanation in particular must be made.  The book itself deals with the basic epistemological question of how one knows.  How do you know this or that is true?

Thus, in the essay below, when I refer to the epistemological question, I am referring to situations in which we have to answer how we know this or that.
